It's a tricky thing as an activist or advocate to identify our sphere of influence and points of leverage. What tactic will effectively inspire the change we want to see? In the case of the climate crisis, I'm convinced that seeking to influence policy change by targeting institutions and systems must be balanced with kind, compassionate dialogue with others around us. It is the values and vision of individuals that ultimately changes systems. Money makes the world go around. I wish it didn't. I wish it was love. But due to massive reinforcing cycles of oppression and violence and exploitation, here we are. So let's disrupt those cycles by using our money (or lack of it) to disrupt the status quo. Change your bank. Tell them why. Tell others. And write letters to your representatives to tell them to get off unceded Indigenous territory. And while we're talking about money, think about how much you can redistribute directly to people and communities that are oppressed by these systems.
